Brunei new contracting state to Patent Cooperation Treaty

14 May 2012
Brunei – or to give the country its full name, Brunei Darussalam – is set to become the 145th nation in the world to sign up to the international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The PCT, which is administered by the UN agency, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), makes it possible to submit just one single patent application that will subsequently protect an innovation in many different countries.

An applicant who files an international patent application within the framework of the PCT receives an international search report and a preliminary report on patentability in the various contracting states. The applicant can then proceed further with the application in the countries chosen.

Formally the PCT comes into force for Brunei in July 2012.
