“Materials technology” is a relatively comprehensive field, comprising the structure, properties, production and use of materials such as metals, plastics, composites, coatings, ceramics, etc. The field further comprises Materials Science, in which the relationship between the structure of materials at atomic/molecular scales and their macroscopic properties is investigated, with the aim to improve and optimize material behavior.

“Nanotechnology” is the science of manipulating materials on an atomic/molecular scale, especially to build microscopic devices. Due to a vast number of application areas, wherein examples are optical and electronic components, energy management, and medical implants, nanotechnology is set to be one of the key technologies of the 21st century.
